Rerooted — Documentary series

Thomson Reuters Foundation

Rerooted was a documentary series exploring the future of food and agriculture in the face of climate change. The series investigated how crops and food systems are increasingly affected by environmental pressures, disease, economic instability, and geopolitical factors. Because the stories spanned multiple countries and topics, the project needed a strong visual identity that could unify the entire series.

My role was to develop the visual branding and key art direction for the series. The challenge was to create a visual language that reflected both the fragility of global food systems and the urgency of climate change while remaining engaging and accessible to a broad audience.

To develop the creative concept, I researched the relationship between climate change and crop biodiversity.

I was particularly inspired by Herbarium Specimens, which are preserved plant samples traditionally stored in books and archives for scientific documentation. I used herbarium specimens as the central visual metaphor because they represent plants that have been collected and preserved after death. I felt this symbolism reflected the risks facing many crops today as climate change threatens biodiversity and agricultural sustainability.

The final visual identity provided a distinctive and memorable look for the series while reinforcing its editorial themes. The herbarium-inspired concept helped communicate the potential consequences of climate change in a subtle but meaningful way, and the branding created a consistent visual framework that connected stories from different regions and communities around the world.

The Rerooted series consists of four documentary videos. In addition to creating the brand identity, I also created the motion graphics for each video.
